WhatsApp check marks give a quick indication of a message’s delivery state, but they do not reveal every detail about what another person is doing. The app’s Help Center explains that one gray check means a message was sent, two gray checks mean it was delivered, and two blue checks mean it was read when read receipts are enabled. A clock icon indicates the message has not yet been sent or delivered.
Understand exceptions and missing receipts
Blue checks may not appear if you or the recipient disabled read receipts, if the recipient has not opened the conversation, or if the phone is offline. A blocked contact or a connection issue can also affect what you see. In a group chat, the receipt changes when all participants have received or read the message. WhatsApp notes that group-chat read receipts cannot be disabled, and voice-message play receipts also have separate behavior.

Turn personal read receipts off or on
On Android, WhatsApp’s current instructions describe going to More options, Settings, Privacy, then toggling Read receipts. On iPhone and WhatsApp Web, labels and navigation differ; use the Help Center guide for the platform you have. If you turn receipts off, you will not see read receipts from other people either. You also may not be able to see who viewed your Status, and other people will not see when you view theirs. This is a mutual setting, not a hidden way to monitor a conversation.
Review your broader privacy settings
Read receipts are only one part of privacy. WhatsApp lets users manage who can see details such as profile photo, About, last seen, online status, and Status audience. You can also control group invitations, silence unknown callers, block or report accounts, and set disappearing messages. Consider what information is appropriate for your contacts and adjust each setting separately; changing one control does not automatically change the others.

WhatsApp says there is no way to hide your phone number while using the service, so be careful about joining large groups or sharing your number publicly. Keep the app updated and do not share registration codes. If an account sends suspicious links or asks for money, verify the request through another trusted channel and report or block it in the app.
Use receipts as a signal, not proof
A read receipt indicates the message was marked as read by the app under the current settings. It does not guarantee that the person understood the message, is available to respond, or has agreed to anything. Avoid treating delivery status as a promise of immediate attention. The setting is there to give users some control over visibility and expectations.
Because WhatsApp updates its app and help pages, use current platform-specific instructions if your screen looks different. Check both the read receipt explanation and the broader privacy settings before deciding what to share.
