WhatsApp’s blue check marks are read receipts: they indicate that a message has been read when the relevant settings and chat conditions allow it. Some people prefer not to share this signal, so WhatsApp provides a privacy control for individual chats. The setting is mutual: when you turn read receipts off, you also lose the ability to see read receipts from other people. WhatsApp’s current Help Center should be treated as the source of truth because app labels and screens can change.
What the check marks indicate
Check marks communicate message status, but they do not tell the whole story. A missing blue pair does not prove that a person ignored a message. The recipient may have disabled read receipts, may not have opened the conversation, or the app may be affected by a connection or device issue. WhatsApp also notes that the first message from a person may not produce a read receipt until the recipient replies or saves the sender as a contact.
Turn off read receipts
On current WhatsApp versions, open Settings or tap your profile picture, choose Privacy, then turn off Read receipts. The precise route can differ between Android, iPhone and desktop releases, so consult the in-app labels if your screen looks different. You do not need an unofficial app, modified client or downloaded configuration file to change this setting. Avoid third-party tools that promise hidden status features; they can put account credentials and messages at risk.

What changes when the setting is off
For supported one-to-one chats, disabling read receipts prevents you from sending and receiving the ordinary read-receipt signal. That trade-off applies in both directions: you will not see when other people have read your messages, and they will not see the same status from you. This setting is separate from message delivery indicators, last-seen and online visibility, profile information, and status privacy. Adjust each control separately if you want to review those parts of your account.
Exceptions to remember
WhatsApp says read receipts are always sent in group chats, even when the privacy option is off. Its Help Center also says this option does not turn off play receipts for voice messages. Status-view visibility can also be affected: with read receipts disabled, you may not be able to see who viewed your status, and other people may not see that you viewed theirs. These details matter because the setting is not a universal invisibility switch.
Privacy beyond blue ticks
Review WhatsApp’s Privacy screen periodically. Options for last seen, online presence, profile photo, about information, status and group invitations are separate choices. Use the narrowest audience that suits your needs, and be cautious about messages from unknown people. WhatsApp notes that your phone number remains visible to people you communicate with, so read receipts cannot conceal your number or identity from a chat participant.
The original 2014 report described a beta-era change. Today, the reliable guidance is simpler: use the built-in Read receipts control, understand that the choice affects both sides, and account for group-chat and voice-message exceptions. If a future app update moves the setting, follow WhatsApp’s official Help Center rather than an old screenshot or a third-party tweak.
