Android’s Data Saver can reduce mobile data use by limiting background transfers for many apps while still allowing the app you are actively using to connect. The names and location of these controls vary by phone maker, Android version and carrier. If you have a strict plan allowance, also check your carrier’s usage meter; the phone’s counter may use a different billing period.

Turn on Data Saver
On Pixel phones, open Settings, tap Network & internet, then Data Saver, and switch it on. On other Android phones, search Settings for “Data Saver” or “data usage” and follow the manufacturer’s guide. Some apps may stop syncing, fetching mail or sending notifications in the background while the feature is active.
Allow essential apps when needed
If an app must receive updates over mobile data, open the Data Saver screen and look for an Unrestricted data or similar option. Enable it only for apps that need background access, such as a work communication or navigation tool. Google Play may also need unrestricted background data to download updates when Wi-Fi is unavailable. Recheck these exceptions occasionally so the list does not grow unnoticed.

Review usage by app
Open the mobile data or app data usage screen in Settings and inspect which apps used data during the selected period. If one app is unexpectedly high, check its own sync, backup or streaming settings before restricting it. Background limits can delay important updates; they do not necessarily prevent an app from using data while you are actively using it.

Use warning and limit settings carefully
Some phones can show a warning at a chosen amount or turn mobile data off at a limit. Set the cycle date and allowance to match your carrier plan, and leave a margin because device and provider totals can differ. A limit can interrupt maps, messages, payments or other services that need mobile connectivity, so understand the effect before enabling automatic shutoff.
Data Saver is a tool for managing transfers, not a replacement for checking your plan. Menu steps may differ on Samsung, Motorola and other Android devices; consult the phone maker if the settings are not present.
