Microsoft expanded its Office preview for Android tablets in January 2015. The preview apps for Word, Excel and PowerPoint were available to compatible ARM-based tablets running Android KitKat or Lollipop, with screen sizes between seven and 10.1 inches. Microsoft later said that Intel chipset support would follow through a native implementation. Those details describe a staged rollout, not universal support for every Android tablet or processor.
What the preview offered
The tablet apps brought familiar Office document editing to Android touchscreens. Users could open and make everyday changes to documents, spreadsheets and presentations, while more advanced capabilities depended on an Office subscription and the app’s feature set. Microsoft used the preview period to gather feedback and refine the apps before removing the preview label later that month.
Device compatibility depended on Android version, processor architecture, screen size and the specific app release. A tablet meeting one requirement could still be excluded by another. Preview software also changed over time and was not intended to serve as a stable long-term business installation. Reports that compressed these conditions into “all Intel/x86 systems” overstated what was available at launch.

Why this mattered
Office on Android tablets was part of Microsoft’s shift toward making its productivity tools available across competing mobile platforms. At the time, tablets were becoming common for reading, editing and presenting documents away from a desktop. Touch-focused apps could simplify common tasks, though complex formatting and macros still worked best in desktop Office.
Using Office today
The 2015 preview is now a historical release. App names, device requirements, account terms and licensing have changed substantially since then. Do not search for old preview APKs or install packages from unofficial archives. For current document work, use the supported Microsoft 365 or Office apps from an official store and check current system requirements. Keep the operating system updated, and test important documents, templates and spreadsheets before relying on a mobile workflow.
