YouTube Ads: Official Ways to Manage Ad Settings or Watch Ad-Free

YouTube ads help fund the service and many creators. If you want fewer personalized ads, YouTube and Google provide account settings that change how ads are selected. If you want an ad-free viewing experience for standard videos, YouTube’s official option is Premium where the membership is available. Browser tricks and third-party “ad remover” downloads can break playback, collect data, or expose your account, and they are not needed to use the controls YouTube provides.

Change ad personalization

Ad personalization changes whether activity and interests are used to tailor ads; it does not mean that all ads disappear. Open your Google Account’s ad settings and review personalization choices. YouTube may also offer app-specific prompts or controls depending on the device and region. Read each prompt carefully before changing it. Turning personalization off can make ads less relevant, but ads may still appear.

Use YouTube Premium for ad-free videos

YouTube Premium includes ad-free viewing for eligible YouTube videos in supported locations, along with other membership benefits such as background play and offline viewing where available. Check the current Premium page for your country, plan, price, and terms before subscribing. Creator-read sponsorships or promotions embedded in a video are part of the creator’s content and may still appear. Ads or promotions can also be associated with live events or other YouTube offerings, so review the membership details for your exact use case.

If you already pay for Premium but still see ads

  1. Make sure you are signed in to the Google Account with the active membership.
  2. Check that Premium is available in your current location and that the membership has not expired.
  3. If you watch in a private or incognito window, sign in if you want membership benefits applied.
  4. Update the YouTube app or browser and restart it.
  5. Remember that a creator’s own sponsorship, product placement, or promotional links may remain even when platform-served ads are removed.

Protect your device and account

Do not install an unknown browser extension, modified YouTube app, or executable that promises to remove every ad. Review extension permissions and download software only from its official publisher. Keep your browser and operating system updated. If an extension is already installed and the page asks for your YouTube password or one-time code, close the page and remove the extension using the browser’s official settings.

Support the channels you watch

Ads are one way creators earn revenue, and some viewers choose Premium to avoid platform ads while supporting the service through a membership. You can also use the controls on a particular ad to provide feedback or adjust ad topics. Those controls affect your ad experience, not whether the creator can include their own sponsorship in a video.

YouTube controls and membership benefits vary by country and app version. Use YouTube Help and the current Premium page for the latest instructions; do not rely on a 2014 tutorial for today’s interface.
