Messenger video calls let people talk face to face from a conversation, but the buttons and options have changed since the feature first launched. Meta’s original announcement described tapping the video icon in a chat; current call features may include quality controls and effects, depending on app version, device, and region. If a control is missing, update Messenger from the official app store and consult its current help information rather than following screenshots from an old tutorial.
Start from a conversation
Open Messenger and choose the conversation with the person you intend to call. Confirm that it is the right account, then look for the video-call control near the top of the chat. Tap it to place the call and allow camera and microphone access if your device asks. If permission was previously denied, use the phone’s system settings to review Messenger’s camera and microphone access. You can revoke permissions later; features that need them will not work while access is off.
Check your connection and call options
A stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection helps keep audio and video usable. Meta has described HD video, background noise suppression, voice isolation, effects, and other calling controls, but availability can differ. Review the call settings shown on your own device before enabling higher quality over cellular data, which may use more data. Use headphones or move to a quieter area if sound echoes, and end the call if you have reached the wrong person.

Understand privacy and encryption
Meta says personal Messenger messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption in its current default-encryption rollout. Its explanation describes encrypted chats and secure storage options for chat history. Check the notice in the specific conversation and current help guidance: encryption availability and account features can evolve, and secure storage setup affects how history can be restored on another device. End-to-end encryption protects content in transit between participants, but it does not prevent someone on a participant’s device from recording or photographing a screen.
Before discussing sensitive information, confirm who is on the call and avoid sharing one-time codes, passwords, or financial credentials. Be cautious with unexpected links or requests to move money. If you receive unwanted contact, use Messenger’s reporting and blocking controls.
Troubleshooting
If video does not start, check the network, restart the app, review permissions, and install available updates. Try another trusted network if the call repeatedly drops. Keep the operating system updated and use official support if account-specific settings appear different. The 2015 global launch article is useful as history, but current app controls and official Meta guidance are the right reference for today’s interface.
