Useful Web Tools for Checking Pages, Performance and Security

A small set of reliable web tools can help you answer common questions: Does a page load quickly? Is its markup valid? Has an email address appeared in a known data breach? Does a suspicious file or URL match a threat already reported to a scanning service? The tools below come from their respective organizations, and each has a specific purpose. None can certify that an entire website is safe or flawless.

Measure page performance

Google’s PageSpeed Insights analyzes a page and reports performance observations and suggestions. Use it to identify possible loading bottlenecks, then test important templates on both mobile and desktop. A score is a diagnostic, not a ranking guarantee. Results can vary with network conditions, page content, and the time of testing; changes should be checked against real user experience and business goals.

Validate markup standards

The W3C Markup Validation Service checks whether web documents conform to markup rules. Validation can reveal syntax problems that make code harder to maintain or behave inconsistently. W3C itself explains that validation is not a complete quality review and is not equivalent to full conformance. A valid page can still be inaccessible, slow, confusing, or insecure, so pair validation with accessibility and functional testing.

Check an account against known breach data

Have I Been Pwned lets people check whether an email address appears in known breach records. A result is limited to the datasets the service has collected; a clean result cannot prove that an account was never exposed. If an address is found, change reused passwords, enable multi-factor authentication where available, and watch for phishing messages. Never enter a current password into a breach-check website.

Inspect a suspicious file or URL carefully

VirusTotal accepts files and URLs for analysis using multiple security scanners and other signals. A detection result can help prioritize investigation, but a clean result does not guarantee safety and a single detection does not by itself establish malicious intent. Avoid uploading confidential files: submitted material may be shared with security partners under the service’s terms. For sensitive workplace files, use an approved internal security process instead.

Find an older public version of a page

The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine can help locate archived versions of public webpages. It is useful for research and checking how a page appeared at a past date, but not every URL is archived and snapshots can be incomplete. Do not use an archived page to bypass access controls or assume that old information is still accurate.

These tools answer different questions: performance, standards, breach exposure, threat signals, and historical page copies. Use the official sites, read their limitations, and combine automated checks with human review. A tool’s result is evidence to investigate, not a blanket guarantee.
