DIRECTV Added WatchESPN and Disney Streaming Apps in 2015

Historical archive: On February 19, 2015, ESPN and Disney announced that DIRECTV video subscribers could use a group of authenticated WATCH apps, including WatchESPN. The announcement covered the U.S. market and a range of connected devices, but access depended on an eligible DIRECTV subscription and a DIRECTV online ID and password. The app names, supported devices and channel availability below describe that 2015 launch; they should not be read as current service details.

What DIRECTV subscribers could access

The launch included live and on-demand programming through WatchESPN, WATCH ABC, WATCH ABC Family, WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney Junior and WATCH Disney XD. ESPN’s listed streams included ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, ESPN Deportes, Longhorn Network, SEC Network and SEC Network +. Seasonal channels ESPN Goal Line and ESPN Buzzer Beater were also listed for the periods when they were in season.

The 2015 announcement said subscribers could watch through computers, smartphones, tablets, selected game consoles and connected TV devices. For ESPN, it described WatchESPN.com for computers and a free WatchESPN app for supported phones and tablets, with additional access through devices including Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku and Xbox. The exact lineup and device list were tied to the services offered at that time.

Authentication and local channel limits

This was authenticated streaming, not a separate free subscription. DIRECTV customers had to sign in with their DIRECTV online credentials to verify access. The press release specifically listed live ABC network streams in eight U.S. markets: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Fresno, Philadelphia and Raleigh–Durham. Other network streams and on-demand programming had their own availability terms, so the listed ABC markets should not be generalized to every WATCH service.

That distinction mattered for viewers: having an app installed did not itself grant access. A subscriber still needed a qualifying TV package, a supported device and a working provider login. The 2015 release is a record of the launch arrangement, not confirmation that the same package, apps or regional rights remain available.

WatchESPN later moved into the ESPN app

ESPN announced on July 1, 2019, that all of its streaming content had migrated into the ESPN app and that the separate WatchESPN app would no longer be available through app stores. ESPN said pay-TV subscribers would continue to receive the same authenticated live streaming content through the ESPN app, alongside app features. This later change explains why old WatchESPN installation links and screenshots may no longer match the current app landscape.

For historical reference, the 2015 DIRECTV announcement shows how TV-provider credentials were used to extend a pay-TV package to mobile and connected devices. It does not establish present-day DIRECTV or ESPN eligibility. Check the providers’ current service terms for current access.
