Skype received a visual redesign and performance updates in 2014, but that release is only historical context now. Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025. Microsoft says Skype users could move to Microsoft Teams Free by signing in with their Skype credentials; eligible contacts and chats would transfer. Paid Skype for Business was not included in the consumer retirement notice and follows a separate product lifecycle.
What Microsoft offered during the transition
Microsoft’s transition page described signing in to Teams Free with an existing Skype account to bring over contacts and supported chats. Some conversations and content were excluded, including certain chats involving work or school accounts, private conversations, and chats with oneself. A transfer of chat data therefore did not mean that every item in a Skype account would appear in Teams.

The export deadline has passed
Microsoft stated that Skype data would remain available to export or delete until January 2026 and that data left without action would be deleted then. That date has passed. Do not rely on old instructions that claim the Skype desktop app or migration page can still retrieve an account archive. If you need records for business, legal, or personal reasons, contact Microsoft through its current account-support channel and ask what options, if any, remain. Avoid third-party recovery tools that ask for Microsoft credentials.
Check subscriptions and phone-number service
Microsoft’s notice addressed paid calling features and Skype Numbers as well as the app. If you had a recurring subscription or phone number, review your Microsoft account’s billing history and any carrier arrangements directly. Do not assume that a retired app’s old screenshots describe current subscription controls.

Choose a supported communication service
Teams Free is Microsoft’s suggested successor for eligible Skype users, but choose a service based on your needs, accessibility, privacy expectations, and the people you need to reach. Before moving to any new platform, check how it handles chat history, call recordings, contacts, linked accounts, and account recovery. Use official app stores or the vendor’s site to install it, and enable multi-factor authentication on the account.
Skype’s interface and feature lists changed repeatedly, so this update focuses on the confirmed retirement and transition information rather than reproducing outdated 2014 menu instructions. Microsoft’s support page is the authoritative source for product-specific status and any remaining account options.
